The name for that kind of tape is duct tape. There is a brand of it called Duck Tape though, so either name is correct. It’s like calling tissues Kleenex, or cotton swabs Q-tips, or bandages Band-Aids.

Actually the name “duck tape” goes back well before not only the Duck Tape brand, but before duct tape itself. The original duck tape showed up around 1900 and was made out of duck cloth. Duct tape itself was created during World War II and was made of duck cloth coated in polyethylene on one side to make it waterproof and with rubber-based adhesive on the other. While the tape wasn’t give an official name at the time, soldiers nicknamed it duck tape, though it’s not known if that was because of it’s water resistance, because of the use of duck cloth, or if it had to do with the DUKW. It wasn’t until the 50’s, when the Melvin Anderson company gained the rights to the tape and began selling, at which time it began regularly being used to repair ductwork, that the name duct tape came about.

This is both an improvement as well as a thing that looks nothing like Rally Chicken.
